My Story
I love curry - like most Japanese who eat it more than once a week. My mother raised her five children with store-bought curry roux that was just as convenient as bouillon cubes. I loved the convenient part but never cared for all the additives like unsustainably produced palm oil, chemical preservatives, artificial flavor enhancers and food coloring, so I developed my own curry powder and curry brick with fresh, natural, organic and sustainable ingredients.

Why Curry Powder? During these pandemic times, many people asked me to make a curry powder product that is used in my curry brick kit, because it can be challenging to source all the spices, (especially since I use more than 15 ingredient for my curry powder.) Also, not everyone has a dedicated spice grinder. So I came up with this handcrafted curry powder, using the best organic and sustainably produced spices. I am very excited to work with companies that are pushing the boundaries to create a new and equitable vision of the global spice trade. I hope you enjoy this curry powder. Sonoko Curry Brick Kit
The original Sonoko Sakai Japanese Curry Spice Kit. Toast, grind and blend a combination of seeds, herbs and spice powders to create a mild curry powder. It can be used in a number of wonderful curry recipes or turned into a curry brick which is like a bouillon cube. Drop the brick in the broth to make a quick and delicious curry dish like Karei Raisu, Japanese Curry in less than 30 minutes.
I keep a few bricks in my fridge and freezer on standby mode. Making curry bricks from scratch will take a little more time in the kitchen than using a commercial curry roux or curry paste. But this exercise will deepen your appreciation and understanding for the distinct spices. It has mine.
My goal is to achieve a perfect harmony of spices so no single spice stands out with one exception: If you want a kick, I suggest you add more chili pepper or chili powder. For curry recipes, click here.
Each kit contains enough spices to make 9 small curry bricks. Each brick makes 4 servings of curry. The bricks can be stored in the fridge for a month or in the freezer for 4 months.
